Email Schizophrenia

In keeping with the theme of information overload, I took a count of my mutliple email identities...

Just for basic email purposes, I have to maintain a minimum of 3 accounts. One for pure work stuff. One for emails with close friends/family. One for ordering stuff (since this accrues more spam) and for things like my ebay account, etc. I had to setup another email account for this class. I have another two for my family's business and my friend's business that I help out with. That's 6... and I have a few other lesser used ones such as my personal website email, etc. It's hard enough trying to keep my work email clean without performing maintenance on all the others.

While the power of increased communication is undeniable, it'd be interesting to see how much time is wasted on dealing with this overdose on a daily basis... whether redundant information, spam, misdirected emails, useless meetings, pointless conference calls, etc.

I can completely relate to your post. I have a hard time keeping track of my email addresses, user names, and passwords. Not only that, but I need to dedicate about an hour each day sifting through my various accounts to make sure it is not overflowing, deleting spam and junk mail, and responding to the ones that need replies. It is almost a job in itself and I really cannot ignore it for the fear of accidentally missing an important email about classes or bank notifications. It would be rather nice if I could take a break from having to check my emails at least 4 times a day, but I receive close to 100 emails per day and that does not even include the spam and junk mail!

Combining personal and professional life, currently I have 7 different e-mail accounts. I decided that’s enough! I often deny invitations from friends who invite me to join them on Hi5, Windows Live, etc…etc…, because I just do not have time to keep up with all that. Sometimes I wonder if I do not know how to manage my time. Whenever I reject those invitations to join this or that community, I always send an email explaining why I am denying. I do not mean to be rude, but there are other interesting things I want to do whenever I am not studying or working.

I love spending time with my family, travelling, reading, going to the movies, admiring the beach, and so many more fun things. So I would not ever trade all these other things in I am passionate and care about, for the sake of catching up with all these ephemeral technologies. While I also do not deny the power of increased communication, I am glad I have clear in my mind what really matters to me. I am working towards to collecting diverse memories of things I experienced in my life – preferably in person!
